In 2024, the Spanish government is engaging in negotiations with 16 countries to trade 26 types of fruits, including cherry exports to China and citrus exports to Japan. In the Americas, Spain is discussing agreements with Canada, Colombia, and Chile. The United States is also expected to export several fruits to Spain. The fluctuating production and export of Spanish cherries, with a high of 127,000 tons in 2021 and a low of 83,000 tons in 2020, is largely due to the region's production levels. The Autonomous Region of Aragon, a significant cherry-growing area, experienced a decrease in cherry production in 2024 due to high temperatures during the flowering period. Currently, Spain is the European country with the most fruits permitted to enter the Chinese market.
