Spain is a leading consumer of tuna, with 19,700 tons consumed in 2021 at a cost of 210 million euros. The country's seafood market, which was 9.8 billion euros in 2021, experienced a 4.5% decrease in 2022. The consumption of other seafood products like fresh and canned fish, molluscs, and crustaceans also varied. In 2022, Spain's imports of frozen tuna surged by 210.4%, peaking at 146.2 million euros, but fell to 75 million euros in 2023 due to COVID-19 stock buying and global price fluctuations. The largest source of these imports was Morocco. Spain's tuna fishing companies, such as Albacora and Luis Calvo Sanz, operate out of Galicia and the Basque Country, targeting various tuna species for both fresh and canned markets. Additionally, participating in the Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona is a popular strategy for finding Spanish buyers for tuna.
