Spanish imports of Egyptian oranges saw a significant increase from 61 tons to 107,676 tons between 2022 and 2023, with 78% entering via the regions of Murcia and Valencia. The rise in imports is attributed to Egypt becoming the largest supplier of oranges to the EU due to the mandatory cold treatment for South African citrus. Despite imports stopping when the Spanish season begins, the stored fruit affects the sales of Spanish oranges, causing damage to the local industry.
