Spanish imports of fresh fruits and vegetables have experienced a significant increase, with a 16% rise in value and 6% increase in volume in the first four months of 2024, compared to the same period in the previous year. The vegetable imports totaled 840,842 tons, with a 9% increase in volume and 17% increase in value, contributing 641.9 million euros. Potatoes alone accounted for 65% of the volume and 41% of the value. On the other hand, fruit imports totaled 730,265 tons, marking a 3.6% increase, with a value of 1,158 million euros, showing a 15% increase. Bananas were the most imported fruit. This growth in imports has sparked concerns within the sector about the rise in the purchase of products that compete with local production.
