A group of Chilean and French scientists is seeking sponsorship to grow tomatoes on the International Space Station (ISS) to understand how an extremophile tomato species from the Atacama Desert can adapt to extreme conditions. The research aims to identify mechanisms for plant adaptation to extreme abiotic conditions and develop new crops for marginal soils and those resistant to climate change. The team, led by Dr. Laurence Lejay and Dr. Rodrigo Gutierrez, will perform gene expression analysis and compare the growth of the extremophile species, Solanum chilense, with its sister species, Solanum lycopersicum. The project could identify new criteria for selecting plant species adapted to environmental constraints due to global warming and potential new species of agricultural interest using CRISPR-Cas9.
