Vietnam has experienced a significant surge in the export of value-added pangasius to the US, with a 42,000-fold increase in July 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, contributing 33% to the total value-added pangasius exports. The exports of dried and other frozen pangasius products to the US have been volatile but saw a doubling in July 2024. Meanwhile, the export value of frozen pangasius fillets to the US, the primary product, increased by 61% in the first seven months of 2024. Vietnam remains the second-largest supplier of whitefish to the US, following China, with a 472% increase in the first half of 2024. This growth in pangasius exports to the US is attributed to increased consumer demand and a decrease in inventories in 2023, although the market faces challenges due to the Russia-Ukraine war and Red Sea conflicts.
