The Federal Association of German Starch Potato Producers (BVS) is calling for a policy change due to increasing production costs and uncertainty caused by high energy costs and alternative fruits. The cultivation area for starch potatoes is decreasing both nationally and in the EU, with lower yields due to climate change. This is putting pressure on the fulfillment of raw material contracts and leading to tight supply and higher prices. As a result, farmers are seeking higher basic prices and additional payments to sustainably produce the valuable starch raw material. The BVS is also critical of the EU Commission's proposed reduction in pesticide use and potential ban in protected areas, questioning the economic and quality production of potatoes under these conditions.
