The North Rift region of Kenya is experiencing a severe food crisis due to prolonged drought and erratic rains, leading to crop failure and mass migration. Approximately 100,000 people in West Pokot County are affected, with some seeking refuge in Uganda. The Kenya Red Cross Society has declared an emergency, providing cash vouchers and foodstuff to affected households, and distributing drought-resistant seeds. The National Drought Management Authority reports that 4 million Kenyans are facing starvation in 23 arid and semi-arid counties. Leaders from these counties have requested humanitarian aid, and the government has allocated Sh1.1 billion to support the poor and vulnerable.
