The import of live yellowtail from Japan to Korea has surged by 20% last year, leading to concerns in the domestic fish farming industry due to falling prices and increasing backlog of fish. The Korea Maritime Institute reveals that Japan is the sole importer of live yellowtail in Korea, driven by high consumer demand and a depreciating Japanese yen. Chairman Kim has urged for stricter regulations on country of origin labeling and quarantine procedures for imported marine products, including a return to 100% inspection rates of imported fishery products from Japan, which has been reduced to 3%. Fishermen are also advocating for stronger quarantine procedures, standards, and higher tariffs on imported live marine products to safeguard the domestic fishing industry.
