The Jeollanam-do Marine Fisheries Science Institute recently announced that it has distributed 100,000 mullet fingerlings to fish farms in the Wando sea area for the first time, in response to frequent fish mortality and reduced productivity due to high water temperatures caused by climate change. Since 2015, when the Yeongkwang Branch (West Sea Specialty Experimental Station) first successfully mass-produced 300,000 artificial mullet fingerlings, various sea cage farming techniques have been studied to achieve quality close to wild fish, including body shape, coloration, sales size, and appropriate harvest timing. Mullet farming has been successfully conducted in areas such as Dolsan and Geomundo in Yeosu, and the Nokdong sea area in Goheung.
