A study has found high levels of Brucella contamination in dairy products in Tunisia, including ricotta, cheese, and raw milk. The research, which analyzed 200 samples from four districts, discovered that 150 samples tested positive for Brucella DNA, with nearly half of the products containing both Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis. The contamination rates were highest in Tunis and Bizerte districts, with cross-contamination likely spread through shared milking equipment, containers, and lack of hygiene measures among vendors. The authors of the study, published in the journal Foods, have called for a revision of Tunisia's surveillance system and the implementation of control programs to prevent brucellosis infection in ruminant herds.
