The ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) in India has made a breakthrough in the captive breeding and seed production technology of the Mangrove Red Snapper, a fast-growing, carnivorous fish species. This development is expected to significantly boost the brackishwater aquaculture sector in the country, given the high consumer preference and market demand for the fish. The first batch of fingerlings will be distributed to selected fish farmers in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, with a buy-back agreement for the selected broodstock to be returned for further breeding. This innovation adds to the list of hatchery technologies developed by CIBA for other fish species, aiming to increase domestic production and provide more options for fish farmers.
