Europe is experiencing a decline in sugar consumption as consumers shift towards low-sugar diets, leading food processors to reformulate products with alternative sweeteners. These sweeteners, including sucralose, stevia, xylitol, and coconut sugar, are under scrutiny for their health impacts, with the European Commission funding the SWEET project to review their benefits and risks. The European Union is also conducting safety assessments of food additives, including sweeteners used before 2009. The campaign promotes 100%-fruit juices, which have been receiving less consumption due to concerns over their high sugar levels, and introduces the Nutri-Score system to rate the nutritional value of products, with a focus on sugar content.
