Rafał Strachota, director of KZPBC, is urging for Polish farmers to have access to new genomic techniques to enhance sugar beet yields. These techniques could improve yield, plant quality, growth rate, rooting depth, and resistance to pests, diseases, and environmental stress. Strachota notes the challenges faced by European growers due to restrictions on substances permitted in other countries and the stagnation in sugar beet yields caused by droughts and the withdrawal of key active substances. Meanwhile, the European Community is slowly accepting New Genomic Techniques (NGT) varieties, proposing two categories: NGT 1 and NGT 2. However, there are concerns about the exclusion of herbicide-resistant plant varieties from the regulation, which is seen as anti-scientific.
