The European Commission has released a report predicting a decline in sugar production in the EU from 2024 to 2035, attributed to climate change, sustainability issues, and shifting consumer preferences towards lower sugar diets. Despite a record high area under sugar beet cultivation in 2023, the price of sugar has since fallen, potentially leading to a reduction in the beet area by 2035. Meanwhile, the per capita sugar consumption in the EU is projected to continue decreasing at an annual rate of 0.2%, reaching 15.3 million tons by 2035.
