The National Sugar Development Council believes that developing the sugar sector in Nigeria has the potential to create hundreds of thousands of jobs for young people and reduce the need for sugar imports, saving the country billions of dollars. The Council appealed to the governor of Nasarawa state, as the Chairman of the Forum of Governors of Sugar Producing States, for support in meeting the targets of the National Sugar Masterplan. The governor expressed his support and called for increased local sugar production to reduce reliance on imports and create over 200,000 jobs.
