Spain's largest olive oil producer has reported a significant shift in cooking oil preferences, with sunflower oil overtaking olive oil as the most popular choice in the country. This change, attributed to the rising costs of olive oil due to reduced harvests, saw Spanish consumers purchase 107 million liters of olive oil versus 179 million liters of sunflower oil in the first half of 2024. The price of olive oil has surged by 50% compared to 2022, while sunflower oil prices have remained relatively stable. This shift challenges Spain's identity as a leading olive oil producer and highlights the financial strain on households caused by the escalating costs of the staple oil.
