In April 2020, agricultural exports from 14 Latin American and Caribbean countries saw an 8.5% increase compared to the previous year, as per the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture. Despite a 29.9% decrease in total merchandise exports, the growth in agricultural exports was led by Brazil, Costa Rica, Argentina, Bolivia, and Guatemala. Products like soybeans, sugar, beef, and pork saw the fastest growth, particularly in China's imports. Central America and the Andean countries also saw growth in exports of coffee, bananas, food preparations, palm oil, coffee extracts, tea, herbs, citrus, and vegetables. Compared to other parts of the world, the performance of LAC exports was remarkable, with exports growing positively in Brazil, Costa Rica, Paraguay, and Argentina, but negatively in El Salvador, Chile, and Guatemala in May 2020.
