Turkey's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has introduced a regulation to manage the invasive puffer fish population in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, effective from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026. As per the 'Communiqué on the Support of Puffer Fish Fishing' published in the Official Gazette, fishermen using registered and licensed vessels will be compensated for catching invasive puffer fish species. A payment of 25 lira per Lagocephalus sceleratus, up to 150,000 pieces, and 10 lira for each of the other specified species, up to 125,000 pieces, will be made. The regulation also includes specific disposal procedures for the caught fish to protect human health, requiring disposal in international waters at certain distances from the shore.
