The import of horse meat from Argentine and Uruguay has been criticized due to inadequate housing conditions and lack of traceability, posing a potential risk to food safety. Recent EU audit reports indicate that while animal welfare has improved, it is still deficient in many areas, and there is also strong criticism regarding the traceability and use of medication in rearing. As a result, the board of directors of Proviande is calling for a voluntary stop to importing horse meat from these countries and urging the Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs to issue an import ban to address these issues.
