Tanzania's Minister of Agriculture, Adolph Mkenda, has declared that he will not sanction any permits for sugar imports, threatening to resign instead. This decision comes in response to illegal pressure from businesspeople aiming to profit from sugar imports, a practice that undermines local production. Currently, Tanzania faces a sugar production deficit, leading to reliance on imports, despite having adequate resources to satisfy domestic demand. A significant investment of Sh576 billion by Kilombero sugar is set to boost the country's sugar production, with the expectation of reducing importation by half.
