Turkey: Target for mussel production, 50 thousand tons

Yalova, Balıkesir and Çanakkale Provinces Mussel Growers Producers Association President Özerdem Maltaş said that more than 8 thousand tons of farmed mussels are produced annually in Turkey and almost all of this is consumed in the form of stuffed mussels. Maltaş stated in his statement that the number of farms producing farmed mussels in Turkey is increasing and noted that the production, which has been uncontrolled for years, has started to be done under better conditions, in a controlled and healthy way. Stating that their union was newly established, Maltaş conveyed that they aim to solve the problems of producers in the sector and to ensure more efficient production and healthy consumption. Stating that farmed mussels are mainly produced in farms established in the Marmara Sea, Maltaş explained that more than 8 thousand tons of mussels will be produced annually in 35 farms in the region in 2024.
