Netherlands: Targeted capture of crayfish in the Krimpenerwaard to be continued

Millions of American crayfish are causing damage to agricultural land, water and nature in the Krimpenerwaard. The approach to exotic crayfish falls under the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature. In anticipation of a plan and resources for a national approach, the province of South Holland is making money available to explore with stakeholders in the Krimpenerwaard how large-scale targeted catching of crayfish can be organised there. Targeted catching of crayfish is effective and leads to nature restoration. This is evident from a multi-year practical test that the water board has carried out in agricultural areas in the Krimpenerwaard in recent years. This test also shows that targeted catching of crayfish is very labour-intensive. This makes the approach expensive.
