The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) is urging farmers in regions known for high aflatoxin contamination to take steps to prevent the spread of the toxin. TBS Food Safety Officer, Dr Candida Shirima, recently provided education on aflatoxins and its health effects to farmers in Handeni and Kilindi districts. The agency is emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety measures at every stage of crop production, from field to processing. Aflatoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain fungi and can cause acute and chronic health issues if consumed. Preventive measures include planting approved seeds, clearing fields properly, and using insecticides.
