Thailand and Vietnam are fighting for a larger market share in the Philippine rice market as the country increases imports and lowers tariffs due to poor harvests. The Philippines, the world's largest rice importer, is projected to import up to 4.1 million tonnes of rice in 2024, a significant increase from the 3.2 million tonnes imported in 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
