The Governing Council has approved a credit increase of 50,000 euros to fund the Viability Plan for the cultivation of pitaya in the Canary Islands under agroecological management, as conducted by the Canarian Institute of Agricultural Research (ICIA). This initiative aims to shift less competitive tomato farms towards more profitable crops, facing challenges such as competition, pests, increased production costs, and Brexit's impact. Pitaya, a crop already introduced in the Canary Islands, offers promising market potential, especially with agro-ecological management for sustainability and profitability. The plan includes research, testing, and market analysis, with funding originally allocated for 31,875.00 euros annually.
