The food industry sees the EU-Mercosur pact as a commercial "opportunity"

The Spanish Federation of Food and Beverage Industries (FIAB) highlighted this Tuesday that the agreement between the European Union (EU) and the Mercosur countries - Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Bolivia - represents a commercial "opportunity" to grow in that market. According to their data, FIAB members exported food and beverages worth 329 million euros to these countries in 2024, while Spain imported from Mercosur for 2.200 million euros. "This (trade) imbalance, to a large extent, is due to the high tariffs that these markets maintain for some products, which represents a very high barrier for exporting companies and a commercial disincentive," the business association pointed out in a statement. In their view, the agreement "comes at a time when the sector is seeking not only an expansion strategy, but also new opportunities for market diversification amid a climate of geopolitical and commercial tension globally."
