This zero tariff covers daily household food items, including vegetables such as potatoes and cabbage, fruits such as apples and oranges, grains and oils such as olive oil, and canned meat and infant food. This policy is a temporary measure aimed at balancing consumer relief and enterprise sustainability, and has been agreed upon by all member countries of the Caribbean Community.
According to Morris Mcchant, the chief news officer of Anba, the effect of the policy will only be evident when the new batch of imported goods arrives in the port in about a few weeks. The Price and Consumer Affairs Division will supervise supermarkets to ensure that the benefits are passed on to consumers, and member countries will also cooperate to monitor market trends and introduce further support measures.
