[Reporter Hong Lan, Korea Farmers and Fishermen Newspaper] Amid the Defense Ministry's announcement to reduce the civilian control line (MDL) from the military demarcation line (MDL) to a maximum of 5km, border area farmers have emerged, calling it a "meaningless formality" and urging for the complete removal of the civilian control line. The Border Area Farmers Union held a press conference in front of the Presidential Office in Yongsan, Seoul, on the 24th, stating, "The 5km reduction of the civilian control line is a decision that ignores the suffering of border area residents who have endured various regulations and property rights infringements for over 70 years" and arguing, "The civilian control line should be completely removed, not reduced." Already, most civilian control line areas are located within 5km of the military demarcation line.
