The Department of Fisheries in Thailand is launching three projects to promote sea cucumber farming among farmers, with the goal of making it a new economic aquatic animal in the country. Sea cucumbers are highly valued for their protein and collagen content, and are used in both food and pharmaceutical industries. However, over-exploitation has led to a decline in wild sea cucumber populations, prompting the need for a sustainable farming model. The projects will focus on breeding and cultivation techniques, with a particular emphasis on the Holothuria scabra species. The Department of Fisheries plans to provide the farming data to farmers to improve survival rates and efficiency, with a focus on sustainable release back into nature to maintain biodiversity.
