Dominican producers are focusing on marketing local mango varieties, especially the Mingolo Creole and Banilejo, in the United States, which has become a major trading partner. The Dominican Mango Cluster, led by Rafael Leger, has been working to develop strategies to market local tropical fruit and give the Dominican mango an international reputation. The Mingolo variety, which was almost unknown a few years ago, is now one of the most in-demand mango varieties in the US, representing 95% of Dominican mango shipments to the US in 2023. The Cluster is also working to increase exports of the Banilejo mango, despite its small size, and is preparing for Expo Mango 2024 in Baní, Peravia, to bring together local producers and industry experts. The long-term goal is to continue giving local mango varieties a good name on the international stage.
