The drought-stricken year of 2025 has become the worst for farmers in the Kharkiv region and the next one will be the same — a scientist.

Throughout the entire history of observations in the Kharkiv region, there have never been such dry years that moisture was absent in the deep soil horizons, says agricultural scientist Sergei Avramenkov. The scientist is engaged in soil research, including tracking its moisture content. "I warned the agrarians of our region as early as last autumn that there would be no yield," says Sergei Avramenkov. "Always at the time of sowing, or already in October-November, even if the upper horizons are dry, there was always moisture in the lower horizons. At the end of 2024, there was no moisture at all even at a depth of 1.5 m. And this already indicated that it would be a catastrophe," Sergei Avramenkov recounted. According to him, only an excessive amount of precipitation (3-4 times the norm) in the Kharkiv region could have brought the yield to an average level. But this did not happen.
