The European Commission (EC) has called for the adaptation of the European wine sector to address structural issues, new consumption trends, and the impacts of climate change and pests. The EC's Director of Sustainability, Pierre Bascou, highlighted the decline in wine consumption due to various factors, including global instability and increasing production costs. The loss of purchasing power of consumers and the vulnerability of markets to climate change have also been noted. The PP MEP, Esther Herranz García, emphasized the difficult situation in the sector and called for strengthening the planting authorization regime and finding solutions for unprofitable producers. The PSOE MEP, Cristina Maestre, raised concerns about the increase in production and distribution costs and the need for balance between production and sales prices. This precedes the first meeting of a high-level group on wine policy, to be held next Wednesday.
