The European Commission (EC) will extend the validity of unused vineyard planting authorisations for three years, which expire in 2024 and 2025, to address oversupply and stock accumulation in the EU wine market. Member States must inform the EC by March 31, 2025, of the wine-growing regions that will benefit from this extension. This decision comes in response to reduced internal wine consumption and weakened exports, especially of red wines, causing market disturbances. The extension aims to decrease vineyard planting areas and limit new productive vineyards in a saturated market. Holders of planting authorisations who do not wish to use them must notify their national authorities by December 31, 2024, without facing administrative sanctions.
