The European Union (EU) has introduced proposals to enhance the conservation and management of tuna in the Indian Ocean, ahead of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (ICAO) meeting in May 2023. The EU's plans include a three-year multi-year plan to regulate tuna stocks, which will be voluntary and based on scientific advice. Additionally, the EU has proposed a mechanism for inspections of high seas ships to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, and updates to the CAOI compliance committee rules to enhance compliance with regulations. The EU has also introduced a new resolution for the management of drifting fish concentration devices and has opposed the February resolution that effectively banned tuna fishing with drifting fish aggregating devices in the Indian Ocean.
