On August 26, the first large-scale shipment of fresh avocados from Kenya to China was transported to Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port, marking a significant milestone in trade relations between the two countries. The consignment, totaling 45 tons, was imported by Shanghai Niuguo Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. and underwent strict customs inspection before being released. This event is part of Kenya's strategy to expand its avocado export markets, which currently include the UAE, Finland, France, and China, with an aim to make China its largest market. In 2021, Kenya exported 84,000 tons of avocados, and targets to exceed 100,000 tons this year. Shanghai Niuguo Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. plans to import 200 tons of avocados this year, with a weekly import schedule starting next year, aiming to reach an annual import volume of over 9,000 tons. This development comes after the recent protocol signed in January for the export of Kenyan fresh avocados to China, and the customs approval in June for the import of Kenyan avocados that meet the necessary quarantine standards.
