The Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality has successfully harvested 2.6 million rosemary plants, as part of the Medicinal and Aromatic Plant Breeding Project (TABIP), aiming to boost rural development and provide financial benefits to farmers. This initiative, which involved distributing the seedlings across 1200 decares of land in Kocaeli, is set to increase the value added to farmers' products through a purchase guarantee and is expected to extend the production chain. A collaboration with TÜBİTAK aims to cultivate cosmetic medicine and natural nutritional supplements from these plants, potentially increasing the product range and providing a more lucrative income for farmers. The project is part of a larger strategy to prevent urban migration and leverage Turkey's diverse endemic plant life to tap into the global market worth $6 billion. The first harvest event was attended by local authorities and citizens, marking a significant achievement in the project.
