From May 15 to September 30, 2021, Russia has implemented a duty-free import quota for sugar, allowing for the import of up to 350 thousand tons of sugar to address market needs and stabilize prices. This initiative is part of a larger package of measures aimed at supporting the sugar industry, following a significant decrease in sugar production last year due to adverse weather conditions. Despite concerns about the potential impact of hot weather on this year's sugar beet crop, which is essential for price stabilization, the Ministry of Agriculture remains optimistic about the increased area under sugar beet cultivation. The import of sugar during the quota period is expected to support industrial consumers and ensure sugar availability during the summer, alongside the new harvest. The effectiveness of this intervention and its impact on future sugar market dynamics remain to be seen.
