A unique collaboration between the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean and the Departament d’Acció Climàtica, Alimentació i Agenda Rural has led to the announcement of the first Mediterranean Restorative Aquaculture Centre in La Rapita, Catalonia, Spain. Scheduled to open by the end of 2024, the centre aims to be a beacon for restorative aquaculture practices in the Mediterranean and Black Sea region. Supported by FAO, the Generalitat de Catalunya, and the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology, the centre will focus on sustainable aquaculture, research, innovation, and knowledge exchange. By adopting restorative aquaculture, which is in line with the FAO's Blue Transformation vision, the centre seeks to regenerate aquatic ecosystems, adapt to climate change, and provide local benefits, contributing to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals.
