Tridge summary

On December 2, the General Administration of Customs issued a notice on the quarantine requirements for the import of fresh Peruvian bananas, allowing the import of Peruvian fresh bananas that meet relevant requirements.

On October 31, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation of Peru and the General Administration of Customs of China signed a protocol on the access of Peruvian bananas and pomegranates. Data shows that in 2024, Peru's banana exports reached 148,000 tons, with the Piura region accounting for 85% of Peru's total banana production.

The notice indicates that only green bananas from Peruvian banana-producing areas that are unripe and have not cracked can be imported. The list of quarantine pests of concern to China includes spiralling whitefly, new pineapple mealybug, palm weevil, armored scale, and Fusarium wilt of banana Race 2.

Fruit gardens exporting to China should establish and implement Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), maintain orchard hygiene conditions, remove rotten, diseased, and cracked fruits during harvesting, and implement integrated pest management. For Fusarium wilt of banana Race 2, fruit gardens should establish a Pest-Free Production Place (PFPP) according to the International Plant Protection Convention Standard No. 10. Once symptoms related to Fusarium wilt of banana Race 2 are found in the orchard, integrated pest management measures must be implemented to eradicate the pest. Only after six months without any record of the pest can the status of Pest-Free Production Place be restored.

During the processing and packaging process, bananas should undergo soaking and washing, manual picking, and grading to ensure they are free from insects, mites, snails, rotten fruits, grass seeds, plant residues, and soil.
