The start of the generous clam harvest in Bahía Magdalena was frustrated due to low demand from China, leaving hundreds of fishermen with limited economic relief from the Covid-19 pandemic. Initially, a quota of 500 clams per permit, for 165 permits, over 15 days would have resulted in over 120 tons of clams. However, the price has dropped to 180 pesos per kilo due to limited demand. Fishermen are also catching various types of scales for the local market as an alternative. The clam fishing season is crucial for the local economy, with quotas and prices varying throughout the season.
