Olivia Grégoire, the French Minister Delegate in charge of Business, Tourism and Consumer Affairs, has proposed an 'origin-score' for processed products to increase transparency and aid consumers in their purchasing decisions. The score would reflect the amount of ingredients of European or French origin in the products. The proposal will be discussed with manufacturers, distributors, and consumer associations from mid-March, with plans to implement the measure across the European Union by 2025. This follows protests by French farmers against foreign-origin products in supermarkets and 372 cases of non-conformity between product origin and packaging found in a check of 1,000 establishments.
