The prices of salted fish, specifically fesikh and herring, have increased in Egypt due to heightened demand during Sham El-Nessim and Eid al-Fitr celebrations, with fesikh now costing between 255 and 300 pounds per kilo, up from 250 pounds last week, and herring ranging from 80 to 90 pounds per kilo in bulk, a rise from 60 to 80 pounds sold retail last week. The price of mullet fish, used in fesikh, has also surged to 120 pounds per kilo from 60 pounds last year, and herring prices have risen due to the devaluation of the Egyptian pound, a result of the Central Bank's flexible exchange rate system adopted in October. The pound has seen a significant decline since March 2022, with the price of the dollar increasing by over 96% since last year.
