The Alata Horticultural Research Institute in Turkey has developed new varieties of kumquat through mutation breeding since 2012, with a focus on improving eating quality, suitability for jam making, and ornamental characteristics. These new varieties, which are cold-tolerant and have a long fruit-bearing period, have caught the interest of the Italian Ornamental Plant Cooperative. Kumquats are valued for their high vitamin C content and their potential to balance cholesterol and prevent diabetes. They are also used in various products like pickles, jams, and ornamental plants.
