The Latin American banana sector has raised concerns about the practices of supermarkets, particularly targeting Kaufland for its lack of commitment to fair pricing and sustainability in the banana industry. Despite Kaufland's involvement in a sustainability project with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the sector accuses the supermarket of failing to ensure fair compensation for producers and engaging in predatory pricing. These criticisms were highlighted during the Fourth Global Conference of the World Banana Forum, emphasizing the urgent need for supermarkets to commit to supporting the industry's sustainability. The article also points out the problem of static retail pricing for bananas, which, through aggressive pricing strategies, positions the fruit as a cheap option, undermining sustainability efforts.
