The Animal and Plant Quarantine Department of the General Administration of Customs in China has suspended the import of pineapples from Taiwan, effective from March 1, 2021, due to the detection of oceanic buttocks powder in mainland pineapples imported from Taiwan. This decision is aimed at preventing plant epidemics and is in line with Chinese laws and regulations. However, the suspension has impacted Taiwan's main export market for its fresh pineapples, accounting for about 90%, and has surprised Taiwan's agricultural department. Taiwan's government is urging the mainland to provide evidence and to lift the ban, while also investing domestically and financially to support its agricultural sector.
