The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) in Spain has ordered the sacrifice of 895 calves on the Karim Allah ship, which has been docked in the port of Cartagena since February 25. The calves, which were en route to Turkey, were found to be in poor health after two months at sea. The transport was initially certified by Spanish veterinary authorities, but was rejected by Turkish and Libyan ports due to issues with community zoning in animal health. The MAPA has taken legal measures to bring the ship to port for inspection, as importing live animals from unauthorized third countries is prohibited in the European Union.
