In March 2024, Georgia's avocado market saw a pivotal development with the introduction of Hass avocados from Morocco, marking the first direct wholesale supply to the country. This was made possible through a collaboration between an importer and the Carrefour supermarket chain, offering these avocados at a significantly lower price of about $4.8 per kg, compared to the usual $6.5 to $7 for Turkish avocados. This move, highlighted by expert Fyodor Rybalko, is set to potentially shift consumer preferences in Georgia, challenging the misconception that Hass avocados' dark color indicates overripeness. This initiative follows the successful direct avocado deliveries from Kenya in 2023, aiming to diversify and enhance the competitiveness of Georgia's avocado market.
