The Myanmar Onion Market is Sluggish

A manager at an onion trading station in Monywa Township told media that foreign buyers would normally come directly to the production site, but now due to border region tensions and flooding, they are no longer coming. Our local market trading is sluggish, while Yangon's side is experiencing price increases due to transportation costs.

Currently, the transportation cost for onions from Monywa to Yangon is between 280 and 300 Myanmar kyat per viss (approximately 1.6 kilograms), with not only a slight increase in shipping fees but also difficulties in finding transportation due to poor traffic conditions.

China, a major onion export destination for Myanmar, has recently encountered flood disasters and faces issues with unprofitable export transportation costs.

It is understood that onions in Myanmar are cultivated in two seasons - rainy and dry - with dry season crops primarily grown for standardized export markets.
