The corn leafhopper (Dalbulus maidis) is one of the main pests affecting the corn crop. Responsible for transmitting the streak mosaic and fine streak viruses, as well as the pale and red wilt bacteria, these insects, when not controlled, can cause severe damage to production. During the 2020/21 and 2021/22 harvests, Santa Catarina recorded significant production losses, with a drop of over 20%. The losses were caused by the combination of the effects of the leafhopper and the drought, which directly impacted the crops.
